“America’s Got Talent” Blown Away by Deaf Contest

Singer Mandy Harvey recently gave an incredible performance on “America’s Got Talent”. The 29-year-old contestant lost her hearing at the age of 18 due to a connective tissue disorder. Despite having sung since the age of four, Harvey took some time off after her diagnosis. Now, she is back and appears to be better than ever.

Harvey sang an original song titled “Try” which is about dealing with her hearing loss while working towards her dreams of becoming a professional singer. “After I lost my hearing, I gave up, but I want to do more with my life than just give up,” she said.

Harvey wowed the judges with her soulful voice, all while being barefoot in order to feel the tempo through the floor. She then received a standing ovation, and will continue on to the next round.

Her song “Try” is currently number 36 on iTunes and the video of her performance has been viewed more 105 million times on Facebook.

Harvey is proof that just because she experienced hearing loss, she does not let that stop her from doing what she loves. In fact, it inspired her to continue to chase her dreams.

Being deaf or hard of hearing does not have to hold you back. The #FlauntYourHearingAids campaign is designed to encourage an open dialogue about hearing loss and hearing aid use. The idea is to show the masses that anyone can be affected by hearing loss and that wearing hearing aids will not cramp their style.
